It’s us girls who love Zalman King. The guys, well, they find Mr. King’s productions “too chatty.” One of my guy friends, supposedly a sensitive poet, said, “There’s too much story. Too much talking and not enough exposure.”
I guess that’s why Zalman King’s movies like Wild Orchid, Delta of Venus, and 9 1/2 Weeks works for females. These three flicks all featured the Zalman King staple of women who were finally letting their sensual selves run free. They finally had enough of being sweet, shy, and good and were saying, “Fuck it. You only live once.”
Mind you, Zalman King’s females are all women who are of legal age. This means, that, yes, they knew who they were before they went off to explore their wild side. Because, really, it’s no fun painting the town red when you’re still living off your parents’ money or when you’re still searching for 80% of your identity.



Unlike the mindless sex dolls of the average porn flick produced for men, the women in Zalman King’s tales always, always have brains. It’s why my friends and I went crazy each time one of us chanced upon another installment of Red Shoe Diaries.
In an interview conducted in time for the DVD release of Red Shoe Diaries in 2000, Zalman King said, “Most good erotica is based very heavily in the characters and the journey of the characters and their compulsion. In my opinion, in good in erotica, you identify with the character and you take the journey with the character, which is different that two people making love on the screen or 10 people making love on the screen.”
